MESSAGE
There is so much excitement going on that I hardly know where to start!
As we say goodbye to summer and hello to fall, Maimonides Chiropractic is getting ready to celebrate the joys of fitness and school!
First. I'm actually saying goodbye to school! I have completed my three-year program in pediatrics and will be taking the National Board Examination this weekend. When this exam is passed, I will officially receive a Diplomate in Chiropractic Pediatrics. This will make me a specialist in pre-natal care and children from conception to age 18! Please keep me in your thoughts this weekend. I can use all the good vibes I can get!
Second, on Sunday October 5th from 9am-12pm, we will celebrate our Wiiihaaa! Backpack Safety Day as part of a very special Sunday Funday! How good is your posture and core tone? Come find out by experiencing first hand Nintendo's phenomenal product called the WiiFit. Not only will you see how strong you are already, but you'll also see how your chiropractic adjustments can create better posture! Then challenge your balance with a school backpack! We have only 30 spots available, so reserve your space today. Click here NOW!
I want to Wiii with you!
We will also have a special raffle which will benefit the good work at
Light The Night a charity devoted to finding the cure for the devastating disease of leukemia. We will be giving away two stylish rolling backpacks! What a great way to start off the school year healthy!
Thirdly, Ms. Susan Deyampert of Mojo,
Marketing & Web Solutions will be unveiling our FABULOUS new website in just days. I have gotten a sneak peak and can tell you that it looks terrific. Check it out at Maimonides Chiropractic's Site. One of the site's really neat features will be for us to offer online classes in Environmental Stress Management. Imagine taking interactive health classes right from the comfort of your own home! And did you know that you can schedule your appoinments on line.
Wishing You A Fabulous Fall!

SAFETY INFORMATION
Backpack Injury Facts:
- Today's heavy loads are causing injuries that can last a lifetime
- 55% of students carry more than the recommended national guidelines of 10-15% body weight. (Simmons College, April, 2001)
- Up to 60% of children will experience back pain by the time they reach 18 years of age. (University of Michigan)
- The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that 7,277 emergency room visits each year result from injuries related to book bags. The CPSC also reports that backpack related injuries are up 330% since 1996.
- Healthcare professionals advise that individuals carry no more than 10-15% of their body weight on their back.
Common Problems and Syndroms Associated with Backpack Injury:
- Neck pain
- Upper, Middle, and Lower back pain
- Vertebral subluxations
- Arm to finger numbness
- Shoulder pain
- Fatigue from heavy loads
- Headaches from upper back and neck tension
Extreme Problems:
- Postural misalignments
- Abnormal gait
- Disc herniation
- Osteoarthritis
Wear a Backpack Properly:
- Distribute the weight properly: Put the heavier items on the bottom and against the back to keep the weight off the shoulders and maintain a better posture.
- Wear both shoulder straps: Carrying a heavy backpack using one strap can shift the weight to one side, which can lead to neck and muscle spasms, low back pain and walking improperly.
- Choose a backpack with thickly padded shoulder straps: Non-padded straps dig into the shoulders causing pain due to compressional loading of the acromioclavicular joints and stress on the trapezius muscles.
- Choose a backpack with a lumbar support: The lumbar cushion will redistribute weight to the lower extremities, creating a fulcrum that facilitates an upright standing position and good posture that is essential for proper spinal health.
- Use an ergonomic backpack: Shift the weight off the shoulders, neck and upper back to the lower back. This will prevent injury and is more comfortable.
Lift a Backpack Correctly:
- Face the backpack before you life it
- Bend at the knees and lift with your legs, not your back
- Keep the pack close to the body
- Carry only what you need. Every extra item adds weight!
The Congress of Chiropractic State Associations and Core Products International, Inc., are proud to offer this backpack safety program
LISA'S
TESTIMONY ON THE ESM
I have just completed the 5 module course of Environmental Stress Management. ESM, the lay person's version of Total Body Modification, TBM which Dr. Erica uses daily in her practice. This is both a fun filled and very informative course. It is perfect for someone like me who is extremely interested in health but who does not have any formal medical training. I am now able to perform ESM on my family and friends and have even taught my husband and daughter techniques that can help me, too. I am excited about using these new found skills on my family, especially on my daughter as she develops and grows through her formative years.
Best, Lisa M.
