MESSAGE

Happy New Year!

I am writing this email to you while watching snow gently fall upon Fairfax. My son and his aunt are playing on the front yard and a fire is burning in our fireplace in the family room.

It gives me time to contemplate and enjoy in the middle of what would be an ordinarily very busy work day.

While sitting down to write to you, I received an email from the Alumni Department of Parker College of Chiropractic (where I went to school) which informed me of the passing of wonderful professor of mine, Dr. Alfred Z. States. (Click here to read about this amazing man: The Life of a Truly Great Chiropractor). Dr. States was a very kind, caring and devout soul who was one of my strongest influences. He would always greet one with a smile, wink and a "there she is!" A hug was always at the ready. I remember his labs very well. He taught us the art of palpation (diagnostic touching), adjusting and giving that extra "something" which makes the difference between a technically good adjustment versus something magically healing.

Although I must admit that I am truly tearful about losing Dr. Al (as folks called him), most of all I am so grateful to have been his student and to have had him as one of my chiropractic examples in this world.

And while on the subject of gratitude, I did want to take just an extra moment to thank each and every one of you who entrust your care and that of your children to me and to my staff. Without you, I would not be able to fulfill my mission (and perhaps, by extension, Dr. States') in this world.

This year will be a great one, I believe. We will continue to serve you and hopefully with some upgrades (including electronic note-taking and records management! Hurray for a more paperless existence!) and at the end of the year a move to my home office space.

If you haven't been in awhile, I invite you back. No better time to start caring for yourself than now. We look forward to taking care of you.

Fondly,

Dr. Erica

Dr. Erica Statman graduates as a Diplomate in Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics

In the middle of December the International Chiropractors Association's Annual Pediatrics Conference and International Symposium on the Science, Art and Philosophy of Chiropractic teamed up for their annual conference and Diplomate in Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics graduation.

Dr. Statman attended the conference from December 12-14 at the Westin Lucaya Resort in the Grand Bahama Island. Teaming up with the Council's Conference this year was ICA/FACTS International Symposium on the Science, Art and Science of Chiropractic.

It was a solid educational program with excellent speakers and commencement of the largest group of Diplomates in Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics (DICCP) in the history of the profession. A memorable event.

Speakers in pediatrics included Andrew Wakefield, MD, Lora Tanis, DC, DICCP, Laura Hanson, DC, DICCP, Joan Fallon, DC, FICCP, Janet Cuhel, DC, DICCP, Kara Heying, OD, FCOVD, Kristie Middendorf, MSc, OTC and Jason Yusavage, DC, DICCP.

The program focussed primarily on one of the most important and controversial topics of today...autism. Andrew Wakefield, MD will gave an update on the connection of vaccines and autism with his own research findings as well as that of other scientists and colleagues. Doctors of Chiropractic with experience in caring for children with autism and other health care professionals, including a doctor of optometry and an occupational therapist who co-manage care of children in the autistic spectrum with chiropractors, shared their clinical expertise. There were technique workshops on infant exam and technique.

Dr. Statman joins only about 120 other Diplomates in Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics in the world. This demanding program took 3 long years of travel, study and rigorous examinations. When asked about her experience, Dr. Statman commented, "this program was a long one filled with learning, comraderie and challenges. While I am glad it is complete, I feel much more confident in my abilities to care for the pregnant and pediatric populations using safe and natural chiropractic care."

This Testimonial Tells Us how one of Our Patients' Energy Level and Motivation has been Changed Through Chiropractics

I sought Chiropractic care because I had neck and back troubles. This reason was affecting the quality of my life for the reason which I had less motivation and less energy.

Dr. Statman's care has helped me in the way that I am now standing and sitting straighter; I now have more energy, and I am feeling more motivated to do things.

Chiropractics has impacted my life by decreasing the pain levels that I once had, I have increased productivity, increased flexibility, and my concentration has improved. What I like best about the office and the care that I receive in the office is that there is a comfortable atmosphere, friendly people, and the care that I receive is gentle. The office resources that I enjoy and are currently using are the in-office brochures.

I am glad that I chose Dr. Statman as my Chiropractor because she is a very friendly caring person; she strongly projects comfort and ease. If someone was considering choosing Dr Statman as their Chiropractor, I would tell them: Go! She is great, and you will love her!

Thank You
JC R.

Banana Black Beans

This delicious and quick-to-prepare dish is one of Dr. Erica's new favorites! Beans and bananas together? It's really awesome. Try it tonight!

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

2 cups cooked black beans
1/2 cup coconut milk (light can be used)
1/4 cup plain soy milk
2 bananas, chopped into 1/2 inch pieces
2 stalks green onion, diced
1 heaping teaspoon hot chili powder

Directions:

  1. Place cooked black beans into a medium saucepan with coconut milk & soymilk and heat on medium-low for about 3-4 minutes.( In a pinch I have used a large 19 ounce can of black beans instead- just make sure to rinse well in a colander before using to get rid of excess salt!) Stir occasionally.
  2. Add chopped green onion & hot chili powder, and allow the liquid to reduce and become bubbly, still stirring occasionally.
  3. Add chopped banana, stir, and allow to heat through. ( Banana shouldn't be added too early or else the pieces lose their shape and become mushy).

Served on a bed of brown rice, with a salad on the side this is easily one of my favourite quick and healthy meals and is so, so delicious!!!

Note: measurements for the coconut and soy milks are approximations since I never measure- I eyeball; you may need to adjust amounts due to your own tastes. YUM!

Serves: 4

Preparation time: 5 min.

Possible role for acupuncture in treating infertility from www.Orgyn.com

Source: Fertility and Sterility 2002; 78: 1149-53
Experts review the evidence regarding the impact of acupuncture on female fertility.

Acupuncture could be beneficial for women with fertility problems, and the potential role of the technique in this context deserves further study, say the authors of a recent review.

"As a medical technique, acupuncture has... been reported as an adjunct in the treatment of various gynecologic problems," write Dr. Raymond Chang (Cornell University, New York, USA) and associates.

They reviewed existing evidence regarding the role of acupuncture in the treatment of infertility, and identified a number of studies indicating that acupuncture can be beneficial as an adjunct to other infertility treatments, including IVF. Only one randomized controlled study examined the independent effect of acupuncture on IVF outcomes, but this indicated a positive effect.
The review authors also highlight evidence that shows the effects of acupuncture may be mediated through neuropeptides that influence gonadotropin secretion, which could in turn affect the menstrual cycle. The technique can also reduce stress, which is known to adversely affect fertility, and has been implicated in the regulation of uterine blood flow.

"Although the definitive role of acupuncture in the treatment of female infertility is yet to be established, its potential impact centrally on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis and peripherally on the uterus needs to be systematically examined," Chang et al conclude.
