What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a total approach to health. The science of chiropractic emphasizes the relationship between the Nervous System and the structural system of the body. Correcting spinal misalignments, called subluxations, is for the purpose of relieving disorders of the human body. If there is a problem or abnormality of relationship between these systems, there may be a problem that manifests as discomfort, pain, or other symptoms.

These effects of abnormal relationships of the body’s system are addressed by the chiropractic adjustment. The adjustment may correct a possible spinal misalignment, the vertebral subluxation complex, and permit the restoration of normal nerve transmission and activity to the body. Thus, the body is able to function at its peak performance and better resist external and internal causes that might create unpleasant symptoms.

Chiropractic’s primary function is not to treat illness or disease. Its purpose is to help make all of the body’s resources available for optimal healing regardless of condition. Results are as individual as people themselves. This is why both young and old, sick and healthy can benefit from chiropractic care. Recent chiropractic and medical research reports that chiropractic care has made a difference for people with the following health concerns.

What’s it all about?

Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ, and system of your body. Your nervous system consists of your brain, spinal cord, and millions of nerves. Your brain is protected by the skull, and your spinal cord is protected by the 24 moving bones of the spine. Many everyday activities can cause these spinal bones to lose their normal position or motion. This can result in nervous system dysfunction and ultimately, ill health. The chiropractic approach to better health is to detect, reduce, and help prevent nervous system dysfunction.

The Primary course of care will be specific chiropractic adjustments. This will help return individual spinal bones to their proper motion and position. There are hundreds of ways of using carefully directed and controlled pressure to restore better position and motion to “stuck” or fixated spinal joints. This may require a quick thrust, or in other instances a slow, constant pressure. Sometimes, only one area of the spine is adjusted, and other times the entire spine will receive attention.

Chiropractic adjustments are safer than aspirin, muscle relaxers, and back surgery. Dozens of research studies have documented the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments. When compared with traditional approaches, chiropractic care is remarkably safe. In fact, millions of chiropractic adjustments are safely delivered to patients every day!

Millions of patients have been delighted with the results of their chiropractic care. Chiropractic results vary. Some patients get results quickly. Others find their recovery takes several months or longer. Children often respond quickly, while adults with long standing spinal problems heal more slowly. The healing process takes time.

Why should I consider chiropractic care?

Long periods of sitting, financial worries, toxic environments, and many everyday activities can stress your spine. Even the slightest trauma can cause interference to your nervous system and compromise optimum health. Maintenance care can help keep you healthy and avoid small problems from becoming big ones.

Besides keeping you at your best, continuing your care can save money. Just as brushing and flossing your teeth can prevent expensive dental work, regular chiropractic check-ups help avoid the expense of having to correct preventable problems.

Continue your chiropractic care so you can enjoy life to the fullest. Your doctor will recommend a schedule of preventive care visits based on his or her clinical experience. Most patients who enjoy a chiropractic lifestyle report they have more energy and feel better.

Proper spinal hygiene is new for most people. Ask questions. get involved. Learn how to become an active partner in the recovery of your health. Make sure you fully understand the role of your spine and nervous system in the maintenance of good health – your most valuable possession.

Research suggests ligaments and muscles that support your spine take longer to heal than indicated by how you feel. your body continues to heal these soft tissues after your symptoms are gone. Continuing with wellness chiropractic care encourages more complete healing. This helps assure a lasting recovery.

Before obvious symptoms provided a warning, your body adapted to the soft tissue damage caused by improper spinal function. Without continued chiropractic care, muscles and connective tissue are predisposed to assume unhealthy patterns. Rehabilitative care continues to retain and strengthen your spine to help avoid a relapse.

Vertebral Subluxation Complex

The brain stem and spinal cord are the primary pathways for nerve impulses to and from the brain. Messages back and forth through these nerves control the health and function of virtually every other cell, tissue, organ, and system of the body. Nerve tissue is so important , it is protected by bone. the brain is encased in the skull, and the spinal cord is covered by 24 moving bones of the spinal column. Many everyday things can cause these bones to lose their normal motion or position. This sets off a chain reaction affecting the spinal bones, nerves, muscles, soft tissues and results in degenerative changes throughout the body. Doctors refer to this as the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. The Vertebral Subluxation Complex is the underlying cause of many health problems and is recognized by its five component parts.

More and more researchers have confirmed the far-reaching effects of abnormal spinal function. Everyday we’re learning more about the implications of these five component parts. Because of the intricacies of the nervous system, more research is being conducted in the areas of immune system response, aging, hormonal involvement, and even genetic consequences. Clearly, the Vertebral Subluxation Complex may be one of the most common, yet overlooked sources of problems.

Prenatal / Pediatrics

“You take your prenatals, you’ve done the tests and go for regular exams. Why not take one more important, safe and natural measure to ensure your health and that of your baby? Find out more about safe, natural chiropractic care.” — Dr. Erica MS Statman

Pregnancy is one of the most amazing times in the life of a woman and her family. It is filled with a constant flurry of emotions and physical changes. Now, more than ever, it is crucial that a woman take the very best care of her health and that of her baby! During the nine months of pregnancy, a woman will often receive a series of examinations by her doctor or midwife to help ensure optimal health and avoid unexpected pitfalls.

Today’s educated woman seeks the kind of healthcare that takes into account the entire person; mind, body and spirit. Chiropractic care is an excellent form of safe and natural healthcare which honors the patient as a whole.

The purpose of chiropractic care is to help optimize the expression of the nervous system whose job is to control all of the functions of the body—including the development of the baby in the womb. What better time to ensure a healthy nervous system than at such a crucial time of development!

“What can I expect on my first visit to the office?”

On your first visit, we will go on a fact-finding mission. Our goal is to learn as much about you and your pregnancy as possible. To accomplish this, we will take a very detailed history, followed by a consultation with the doctor. Once this is complete, Dr. Erica will perform a chiropractic examination to diagnose misalignments, called subluxations, in the spine and pelvis, which may cause interferences to your health and that of your baby. She may feel for the position of your baby and palpate for healthy abdominal movement. The examination is very gentle and no x-rays will be taken. If you are in significant discomfort or have another pressing issue, you may, at the Doctor’s discretion, receive an adjustment on the first visit. Once your examination is complete, we will compile a Report of Findings. This Report of Findings is a consultation which will help you get the most out of your care.

Answering the Most Important Questions About Chiropractic for the Pregnant Woman

Is chiropractic safe?
Yes! Chiropractic is very safe and sensible for you and your baby. Dr. Erica has been trained to adjust the spines of pregnant women and has special tables that can be modified to keep you comfortable—even into your ninth month! In addition, because chiropractors do not prescribe medication, you and your baby will not be exposed to the dangerous side-effects that drugs can sometimes produce.
How long will treatment last?
How much chiropractic care is needed will depend upon the complexity of your condition, how long your subluxations have been present and your ability to follow up on the doctor’s recommendations outside the office. Sometimes when patients come to our office, they have a specific complaint which may need intensive care in the beginning. As the spine becomes more stable and healthy nerve transmission is restored, the frequency of care decreases. Many of our patients stay on with chiropractic care long after symptoms disappear because they have experienced that being subluxation-free helps them stay at their best. However, how long a person chooses to receive care is always up to her.
How much does care cost?
The cost of care depends upon a number of factors. Our office participates with some insurance companies. And we are happy to verify your insurance benefits for you. If we do not participate with your insurance, we will file your claims electronically so that you can be reimbursed quickly. If you have no insurance or you have a very restrictive policy (such as an HMO), we are proud to office Preferred Chiropractic Doctor (PCD) which offers a 25% off of all of our products and services in the office. We will be glad to help you find out if you qualify for this great program!
What is an adjustment?
An adjustment is a gentle, controlled force applied by the doctor’s hands to the area of misalignment of the spine and pelvis. Most adjustments feel great and many pregnant mommies feel a sense of relief afterward. The Doctor uses techniques specially modified to accommodate your stage of pregnancy.
What is myofascial or trigger point therapy?
This is a gentle technique used to help loosen tense, constricted and painful muscles and increase the flow of blood and oxygen to the tissues. It also allows for more room for your baby to move around– and that spells relief for mommy!
What is the Webster In-Utero Constraint Technique?
This gentle technique helps relax the muscles and ligaments of the pelvis. Once these structures are relaxed, this may allow your baby to turn him or herself to the optimal head-down position. Current literature reports that this technique is successful up to 95% of the time. The sooner we get to see you, the better!
What is the Bagnell Technique?
This technique aligns the pelvis of the mother whose baby is mal-positioned. It is a very effective way to encourage a proper vertex (head down) presentation of the baby.
Do I have to have a problem in my pregnancy to see a chiropractor?
Not at all! Chiropractic should be used as a form of preventative maintenance for even the most healthy and uncomplicated pregnancies. Periodic checkups should be as common as your periodic weight check-ups.
I'm already 8 months pregnant. Is it too late for me to get chiropractic care?
Although it’s best to start from the very beginning, don’t worry. It’s never too late for chiropractic care! Patients can even receive adjustments during labor.
Can spinal care help postpartum depression?
Chiropractic is beneficial for people with emotional stress. Medical journals have reported that postpartum depression is rare in patients receiving manipulative therapy.
Can my baby receive chiropractic care?
Of course! We highly recommend this as soon after birth as possible. In fact, your baby’s first wellness check-up is on the house.
Can you tell me about Dr. Statman? What is her background in pre-natal care and pediatrics?

Our Mission for Children

Even as early as 1990, there were millions more visits each year to natural healthcare providers like chiropractors than to all medical doctors in the United States. Most adults are aware that there is far more to healthcare than drugs and surgery.

While no smart parent would knowingly subject his or her kids to risky drugs or procedures, parents don’t always realize that there are natural ways to help keep kids healthy. This is where chiropractic comes in. Everyone can benefit from having a healthy nervous system!

Chiropractic care for kids is really different than it is for adults. Technique is tailored to the age and special needs of little ones whether they are newborn or school age. Adjustments require no more pressure than the pressure you’d use to test the ripeness of a tomato. And kids tend to really enjoy their time in our office!

  • We believe that all children are gifts from a loving Creator. As such it is our duty to nurture and teach them as well as to learn from them.
  • We believe all children have limitless potential.
  • We believe all children have the inalienable right to have a birth free from trauma.
  • We believe all choices concerning healthcare belong in the hands of informed parents and healthcare providers.
  • We believe in a multifaceted approach to health including chiropractic, proper diet, healthful activity and those things that work in harmony with the innate intelligence of the human body.
  • We believe that the best approach to healthcare is one of prevention.
  • We believe it is imperative to work with all healthcare providers for the benefit of our practice members.
  • We believe care in our office should feel safe and fun!
  • We believe it is essential to teach children that they heal from the inside out.
  • We believe that when a child presents with a problem or challenge, it is often important for the family to be involved in the healing process.
  • We believe that symptoms are the body’s way of letting us know that there is imbalance. We seek to correct the cause of imbalance rather than to cover up symptoms.
  • We know the human body is entirely controlled by the brain, spinal cord and nerves.
  • We know that any interference to the nervous system caused by physical, chemical and/or mental stresses is harmful to the balanced expression of health.
  • We know from a scientific and philosophical point of view that spinal misalignment causes interference to the nervous system.

The foundation of our purpose is to teach our practice members about the principles of health, to correct interference to the nervous system and to support the expression of health on all levels.

How can you tell if your child is experiencing nervous system interference?
Before your child even comes into this world, some of the keys to healthy development depend upon mom’s health. This includes proper nutrition, exercise and stress management. However, even with all of the right things in place, a newborn can still experience stress from the trauma of birth.

The pulling and twisting forces on the neck of a baby are significant and very common in the United States. It’s been estimated that up to 1 in 7 births end in Cesarean section and many more than that involve the use of forceps and vacuum extraction. Even so-called “natural” birthing methods can cause stress and result in subluxations. Subluxations are areas of the spine that interfere with, or distort the messages that must travel between the brain cells and body tissue cells. Subluxations can compromise health and development right from the start and other problems can appear years down the road.

How do we determine if a child has subluxations?
Well, only an exam by a chiropractor experienced or specializing in pediatric care can reveal this condition.

When a beloved pet is sick or injured, he can’t tell the veterinarian what’s wrong. The same is often true of our little children. So, we have to observe carefully. Infants and toddlers will do things like tugging at their ears, crying or using all the words they have to try and show us something is wrong. They may also have unexplained tears, lack of appetite, lethargy and allergies. Newborns and infants will sometimes show a preference to hold their head and neck to one side and may even cry or fuss when encouraged to alternate breasts during feeds. They may exhibit similar signs during diaper changes.

But if we don’t know what to look for or how to help, it can make us as parents feel very helpless.

Subluxations are often found, particularly in the upper neck, in children who suffer from chronic earaches. We find that the subluxations interfere with the body’s ability to drain bacteria and fluid out of the inner ear, and that can lead to infections.

Traditional treatments usually involve the prescription of antibiotics like amoxicillin, but even the American Academy of Pediatrics is asking pediatricians to hold off on this kind of treatment. Although the antibiotics may cause a temporary resolution of symptoms, the infections seem to come back time after time, natural immunity becomes compromised, and the medications can cause other problematic signs such as yeast infections, intestinal problems and bacterial resistance. The latter is the most worrisome because this means that antibiotics may not work when they are truly needed later on for a serious health condition.

In addition to ear infections, chiropractic is well-documented in its helpfulness for children suffering from colic. When subluxations are corrected, children tend to sleep and eat better. And that’s great for everybody!

Fortunately with chiropractic, there are no unpleasant side-effects and it helps the body do what it was designed to do and that is to heal itself naturally.

As kids grow, their ability to explore and manipulate their surroundings becomes more complex. They are more able and willing to take risks and that can mean accidents. Slips and falls happen. A patient of ours once said, “Dr. Erica, you just can’t call yourself an experienced parent until you’ve spent at least one night in the ER with your kid waiting for stitches to be put in.” We laughed about it but only because this is such a common experience of childhood and parenthood. Stitches, kisses, and hugs can give a lot of comfort, but they don’t address what is happening to the spine. Dr. Erica likes to say that it is a good thing that kids “bounce”, but uncorrected subluxations can lead to real problems later on. This is why regular check-ups are crucial during periods of rapid growth.

Why do some kids get sick and others don't?
Well there are several reasons for this. One important one is that subluxations actually interfere with the nervous system’s ability to direct the warding off of infection. Restoring integrity to the nervous system is chiropractic’s #1 purpose. Many of the families in our office report that their kids miss much less school and seem healthier than other kids their age. In fact, many of the new families we receive in our office are referrals from our established patient families. Parents talk to each other and are always wanting to find out what really works—especially when they get tired of running to the pediatrician for every runny nose.

Even as kids become young adults, chiropractic has its place as a foundation of healthcare. In adolescents there are many hormonal changes, awkwardness and changes in self-esteem. They often suffer from a variety of non-specific aches, pains, muscle spasm and other problems which many adults ascribe to “growing pains”. But while these pains are considered common, they certainly aren’t normal. They seem to “go away” because kids are very adaptive, however, they are very often left with muscle imbalance, uneven leg lengths and pelvic heights and other problems which become chronic and difficult to fix later on. Especially common in girls are abnormal sideways spinal curvatures called scoliosis. If caught early, they have the best chance of being halted or diminished and be replaced by healthy muscle tone, good posture, and better fitting clothes. Parents often consult us about how to work with their teenagers to help them have the best health possible.

It’s also about attitude…

Aches and pains are a common part of life. And let’s face it. It’s easy to pop a pill even when we know that it doesn’t really fix the problem. We often focus on the need to feel better, even if it is just temporary. But think for a second. What does this teach our children? How can you explain the difference between a “good” drug and a “bad” drug? We have to be very careful what messages we give…and live. Kids look to us as examples. If we show them that if every time we don’t like the state we are in mentally or physically, all we have to do is to take a pill, then why should they do anything different? Is it any wonder why kids today seem to slip so naturally into lifestyles involving drug and alcohol abuse? We know that almost every drug has side effects whether they are stomach bleeding, liver and kidney damage or other even scarier things.

We think it is time to teach something different. Kids who are taught their bodies are a unique incredible creation capable of growth and healing, they will be less likely to abuse themselves. Like their parents, they won’t want to put junk in their bodies. Instead, they’ll maintain a lifelong interest in self-care including good nutrition, proper rest, healthy activity and positive ways to handle stress. Chiropractic care can be an important part of teaching kids to honor themselves because they can understand chiropractic care can help get to the root cause of problems without drugs.

We want kids to be happy, healthy and take on the world only in positive ways. Raising kids is an enormous responsibility but which can give a lot of joy. As parents, you’ll make a lot of decisions for them. Will you allow needless antibiotics to tamper with your child’s immunity? Will you agree to ear surgery to install an artificial drainage system without having tried everything else possible first? Will you consent to mind-altering drugs like Ritalin? Or will you learn to trust the ability of their bodies (and yours) to heal naturally without the hindrance of subluxations?

The choice is always yours. Please choose wisely. Call us today for a complimentary family consultation. We’ll let you know if you and your children are good candidates for care and what we can do to help.
